Driving is a major source and symbol of independence, and returning to driving is a goal of many stroke survivors. However, there are several factors to consider about your safety, and the safety of other drivers, before you get behind the wheel again.
lack of ankle/foot strength and control for the accelerator and brake pedals
lack of arm strength and control for turning the steering wheel
visual impairments (specifically UFOV, or Useful Field Of View and peripheral vision)
cognitive processing speed
attention deficits
seizures
impaired decision making
impaired memory
medications that could alter any of the above
In many countries (and states within the US), physicians are required to report every patient who has had a stroke to the department of motor vehicles, so that their drivers license can be temporarily suspended.
The Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists is an organization focused on ensuring a safe return to driving for people with various disabilities. They have contact numbers for finding a driver rehab specialist in your area, and an extensive listing of links to mobility equipment dealers.
