Driving After a Stroke

Driving is a major source and symbol of independence, and returning to driving is a goal of many stroke survivors.  However, there are several factors to consider about your safety, and the safety of other drivers, before you get behind the wheel again.

  • lack of ankle/foot strength and control for the accelerator and brake pedals
  • lack of arm strength and control for turning the steering wheel
  • visual impairments (specifically UFOV, or Useful Field Of View and peripheral vision)
  • cognitive processing speed
  • attention deficits
  • seizures
  • impaired decision making
  • impaired memory
  • medications that could alter any of the above

In many countries (and states within the US), physicians are required to report every patient who has had a stroke to the department of motor vehicles, so that their drivers license can be temporarily suspended.

The Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists is an organization focused on ensuring a safe return to driving for people with various disabilities.  They have contact numbers for finding a driver rehab specialist in your area, and an extensive listing of links to mobility equipment dealers.
